Happy Couple

on friday 13th Bulbgirl and i went to a wedding. it was in Fife. St.Monans to be precise. my friends Steven and Susan were getting hitched in a place that is dear to their hearts. they don't come from that area but have been there often enough on holiday to fall in love with the place. i can see why. the town has a very dream-like quality.

they are both talented artists and are well matched. here are two paintings by Susan. one is a portrait of Steven, and the other is a selfportrait:

Light Humour

so Easter this year has come and gone. my mother was going to mass, so Bulbgirl and i decided to accompany her. amazingly i didn't get hit by a lighting bolt as a entered the church, or even when the priest made eye contact. a brief flicker of recognition passed appeared on his face (it's been a while since i visited).

we were all given candles to share the light from the paschal candle. the priest came to Bulbgirl first as she was on at the end of the pew but unfortunately she had her candle the wrong way up.

the priest tried a few times but couldn't quite manage so moved on to my candle. i found this hilarious and couldn't stop myself laughing like i did 20 years ago (my brother's fault of course). it instantly brought back those memories of laughing in a place where you are not supposed to laugh. i managed to stop, but then heard Bulbgirl starting to snigger quietly, which of course set me off again.

ever happen to you?

Water Bed

sleeping in the bath: don't recommend it.

this last week hasn't been so good body-wise. sleeping patterns have been a little out of whack and when i do sleep a lot, i don't seem to get any rest. one night i thought i'd relax my aching bones in a warm bath. previously i was more of a showering type than bathing type, but Bulbgirl has converted me of late. baths are just so comfy though, i tend to fall asleep.

normally if i wake up in lukewarm water i get out and go to bed. this time though i was so dog-tired, the thought of dragging myself out of the tub was too much, so i drained out a little water and added more hot water, and then went back to sleep. not just once but a couple of times. stupid i know, don't try this at home. they say you can drown with just a teaspoon of water. eventually i got out at 8am and went to sleep in a proper bed. my hands were super pruned.

Q:what's the weirdest place you have fallen asleep?

Bathed in Light

last night bulbgirl and myself took ourselves off to see some sunshine. sunshine at night? preposterous i hear you exclaim, but it was Sunshine, the latest movie from Danny Boyle, where light rays from a projector gave the illusion of watching a wall-sized sun.

despite having only 4 hours of sleep over the previous 2 nights, i went along. sometimes you can nod off a little in movies if you are tired, but i was on the edge of my seat for most of the film. some of the script is a little familiar but well worth a watch.

the plot is a little derivative of some other space flicks but the visuals are what stunned me. seeing things like the sun and planets (coupled with deep rumbling sound effects) move me deep inside. with easter almost upon us, i feel the presence of god more in the cinema, than when a christian tries to convert me on a bus trip. maybe it's because films often get us to look at our place in the universe, i don't know. Danny Boyle was said to have considered the priesthood, but he was discouraged by a priest and is quoted as saying:

i don't know if he was trying to save me or the priesthood.

i think it shows in his movies. Scorcese once considered it too. the vatican's loss is cinema's gain.

here is the trailer featuring the music of the kronos quartet which was used in requiem for a dream.

i think i might even go and see it again.
Q:is going to the cinema a religious experience for you?
